![]() She puts on fake horns because she's told to. She goes to a train station because Xephros told her to. In the second act, however, Joey lacks choice. As a player you don't have much choice over it, but she actively goes against her brother's wishes and chooses to use the key. Most importantly, one crucial decision - to enter the portal. Even if the player can effect the way things go, the character might not. Similarly, in a game with multiple choices, a character can have no agency. But, this actually only effects the player's agency - character's can still effect their own world within a linear narrative. In a game with a linear narrative, without multiple endings, its tempting to argue that no character has any choice or agency. When talking about a videogame, agency gets a little more complicated. This term is almost always used to talk about female characters, as many problematic portrayals of women stem from their lack of agency - their inability to make an active decision. They simply let the world happen to them, often just waiting for a prince. Its used a lot when discussing classic fairy tales, as the princesses in those stories usually do not have any agency. Agency, as a literary term, refers to the character's ability to effect their world. However you may feel about it is your business (I'm not trying to make you hate it!) but I've recently realised one of the reasons why I found it so disappointing. I have been thinking a lot about the second act of Hiveswap, as many others have.
